Legends Nine is most famous for its ninth hole—known as the “Mickey Mantle Hole” after the New York Yankees legend who hosted his Mickey Mantle Golf Classic charity tournament at Shangri-La from 1991 until his death in 1995. On this challenging par-5, Mantle once shot an albatross (a score of 2—which is 3 under par on a single hole)! The challenge is in full view from the tee box, with a choice of two greens separated by a dramatic and spectacular waterfall. One might choose the straight long fairway to the left, which is the safer option, or attack the peninsula green over water to the right. It takes moxie to reach the peninsula in two, yet layup considerations can be costly—as the water is a ball magnet.
